Chaldean Catholic Church elects new leader
The Chaldean Catholic Church has a new patriarch. On April 9, the Chaldean Synod held an election in Rome and chose Archbishop Amel Shamon Nona as its leader. Nona replaces Cardinal Louis Sako, who resigned on March 9 after leading the Chaldean Church since 2013. The change in leadership comes amidst a scandal involving Bishop Emanuel Shaleta, head of the St. Peter Chaldean Catholic Cathedral in San Diego, California.
