Coordination Framework sets the pace in emerging government formation process
The trajectory for how this round of government formation will unfold is becoming clearer. Following the announcement of the final election results by IHEC earlier this week, the Coordination Framework moved quickly to declare its intention to be the largest parliamentary bloc, which would give it the right to nominate the next prime minister.
This decision had been widely expected since all factions within the Framework have repeatedly emphasized their commitment to maintaining the cohesion of the umbrella organization. What was less anticipated was Prime Minister Sudani’s decision to remain within the group. He attended Monday’s meeting at former prime minister Haider Al-Abadi’s residence, signaling that he intends to stay engaged in the Framework’s internal process to choose the next prime minister.
