Election campaign season officially kicks off tomorrow
The Independent High Electoral Commission has approved new regulations governing election campaigning, consisting of 29 provisions. The announcement came alongside confirmation that campaigning will formally begin on October 3.
Official figures released by IHEC show that 21.4 million people have registered to vote, including 1.3 million security personnel. This represents a decline compared to the 2021 election when 22.1 million voters had been registered. While the precise number of eligible voters over 18 years of age is not publicly known, estimates place it between 28 and 29 million. The lower number of registered voters this year means that the potential decline in voter turnout will be contained, since turnout is calculated against the total number of registered voters rather than the wider eligible population.
