Iraq walks diplomatic tightrope amid Israel-Iran conflict
With pressure mounting from Iran-aligned groups to act, Sudani’s government is working to preserve a fragile sovereignty by voicing solidarity with Iran while rejecting unilateral military actions or any use of Iraqi territory in regional conflict. Baghdad’s current strategy hinges on diplomacy, calling for ceasefires, renewing talks on Iran’s nuclear program, and engaging international partners to rein in further escalation.
On Sunday evening, the Coordination Framework convened a meeting attended by PM Sudani. In a statement released afterward, the Framework denounced what it described as Israel’s repeated acts of aggression against Iran. The group called on the international community, especially regional states, to stand against Israel and urged Iraqis to demonstrate in solidarity with Iran.
