Iraq’s electorate defies boycott calls with strong voter turnout

The Independent High Electoral Commission’s announcement of a 56 percent turnout came as a surprise to nearly everyone. While there had been some expectation that participation would at least match that of the 2021 election, few anticipated that it would rise this sharply, especially given Muqtada Al-Sadr’s vigorous campaign to boycott the vote.
