Kurdistan Region sets parliament election for October 20
After multiple postponements and intense political wrangling, President Nechirvan Barzani has finally set October 20 as the new date for the Kurdistan Region parliamentary election. This decision breaks the long-running deadlock and paves the way for much-needed legislative renewal.
The announcement of the new date was communicated today through Barzani’s spokesperson, Dilshad Shahab. He emphasized the necessity of adhering to the new schedule, stating, "This date is not the date that everyone agreed on, but it is the date that we ultimately chose. There is no other solution other than holding the Kurdistan parliament elections." Shahab also noted the detrimental impact of the prolonged lack of a functioning legislature on the Kurdistan Region's legitimacy and autonomy, warning that further delays could worsen the situation.
Elections were initially scheduled for two years ago, but the process has been delayed several times since.
