PM Sudani’s decision this week to dismiss the head of the Sunni Endowment (Diwan al-Waqf al-Sunni) underscores moves to reward his political allies ahead of the election.

Sudani removed Mishan Mohi Al-Khazraji, whom he had appointed at the start of his premiership in December 2022, and replaced him with Amer Shakir Al-Janabi, a long-serving director general within the Diwan. The Sunni Endowment oversees mosques, religious schools, and the appointment of clerics, making its leadership a powerful post within Iraq’s Sunni religious establishment.
