Vote on new speaker expected next week
Three Sunni blocs have endorsed the Coordination Framework's push for a swift election of a new parliament speaker, following a Supreme Court ruling that paves the way for a vote to take place next week.
Siyada, Azm, and Hasm issued a joint statement on Tuesday urging the parliament's presidium to organize a vote as quickly as possible. In March, these three blocs, united in their opposition to Mohammed Al-Halbusi, collectively supported the candidacy of Salim Al-Eissawi from Khamis Al-Khanjar’s Siyada party.
Today’s statement from the Sunni blocs was articulated a day after the Coordination Framework criticized Sunni groups for the prolonged vacancy in the speaker's position. Following a meeting last night, the Framework gave their Sunni counterparts one week to decide on how to proceed with the vote in parliament, otherwise a session will take place regardless.
