Weekly roundup: Sudani attempts to reassure public as dinar plummets
Prime Minister Sudani returned from Paris on Saturday to confront a worsening financial situation at home, with the value of the Iraqi dinar reaching a record low. He dedicated a large portion of his first national televised interview to reassure the Iraqi public. Within his own administration, he continues to appoint advisors, with the latest being Hasan Al-Yasiri as advisor for constitutional affairs. On the legislative side, leadership positions have been determined for 15 of 25 parliamentary committees, reflecting the dominance of Halbusi, the KDP, and State of Law. The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Morocco each paid a visit to Iraq. President Biden spoke with Sudani on the phone on February 2, in the lead up to the Iraqi delegation’s upcoming visit to Washington, which will be led by Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein.
